Problem Space
Masculine and feminine. These gender binaries have been ingrained into society over thousands of years. Now androgyny and gender neutrality are moving fast into modern art and culture.
My capstone is a visual exploration into if and or how androgyny exists in two dimensional design. To explore from the ground up how gender is represented in design and to see if we can break out of the mold and create a new language of gender in design moving forward.
Design Criteria
My project is a compilation of research into elements and stereotypes within graphic design. The criteria I set for this project was to explore if non binaries can exist in graphic design as they do in art and fashion. I understand that this is a very subjective topic and everyone has their own ideas and influences as to what is masculine and feminine. I acknowledge fully and respect everyone’s opinion to disagree with my theory and work. I focus on working with the more obvious and rooted stereotypes in my studies to give a grounding foundation to this idea across a larger audience of designers.
Book
My end result of this idea was compiling all my research and studies into a book so that one can see the whole progression and research into androgyny that I did. Click the button below to access a pdf of the book:
Audio
In the book I detail out three different interviews with different professionals of a range of fields in the creative industry. In one of the interviews I talked to an artist named George H. Lewis. He dives into detail on the social structures surrounding this topic in the clip below.
